Yes, with the right preparation the Ha Giang Loop is safe for travelers. Hagiang Loopways provides quality helmets, elbow and knee guards, raincoats and well-maintained motorbikes on every tour. Our certified local guides know every switchback and ride at a safe pace.
If you have no riding experience or aren't confident on mountain roads, we recommend our Easy Rider tour — you ride pillion behind a local expert driver. Jeep tours are another safe option for families and travelers who prefer comfort.
For self-drive motorbike tours, Vietnamese law requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) with class A1 endorsement matching your home country license. Travelers without a valid license should choose an Easy Rider or Jeep tour instead — no license required.
If you arrive without an IDP, we'll happily switch you to one of our license-free options before departure.
For self-drive: intermediate to advanced riding experience is required. The Ha Giang Loop has steep mountain passes, switchbacks and occasional gravel — not the place to learn. You should be comfortable on a semi-automatic 110-150cc motorbike for at least 6 hours a day.
If you're a beginner or unsure, the Easy Rider tour is our most popular choice — you simply hold on and enjoy the views. Jeep tours need zero experience.
Hagiang Loopways runs daily departures year-round, but each season has its own beauty:
September – November: rice harvest gold + clear skies. The most popular time.
March – May: pear and plum blossoms, comfortable temperatures.
December – February: misty mornings, buckwheat flowers, cool weather (8–18°C).
June – August: green season with rice paddies in full color, occasional afternoon rain.
Whatever month you arrive, we have the right gear and route for the weather.
Yes — Hagiang Loopways runs three types of Ha Giang Loop tours:
Self-drive motorbike — for experienced riders with an IDP. Maximum freedom.
Easy Rider — ride pillion behind a certified local driver. No license, no experience needed. Most popular option.
Jeep tour — open-top 4x4 with professional driver. All-weather, comfortable, ideal for families and photographers. Available for 2D1N, 3D2N, 4D3N and the 5D4N Ha Giang–Cao Bang loop.
Group tours — small groups of maximum 8 travelers from different countries. Great for solo travelers and budget-conscious riders. Daily departures, fixed itinerary.
Private tours — just you and your group with a dedicated guide and driver. Flexible itinerary, your own pace, custom stops. Best for couples, families, or groups of friends who want freedom.
Both options include the same accommodation quality, meals, and experienced local guides.
Yes, absolutely. Many travelers join our group tours as self-drive riders while their friends or partners go as Easy Rider passengers. You'll ride together, stop together, eat together — but you're in control of your own bike. Just make sure you have a valid IDP class A1.
The most common way is an overnight sleeping bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang City — about 6–7 hours. Buses depart Hanoi around 21:00–22:00 and arrive in Ha Giang at 04:00–05:00. You can rest at Hagiang Loopways Hostel before your tour briefing.
We offer four bus options to book with your tour: VIP sleeping bus, cabin sleeping bus (premium private beds), limousine van (5–6 hours, fastest), and regular sleeping bus (most affordable).
After the tour, the same buses run Ha Giang → Hanoi — you'll arrive in Hanoi early morning the following day.
You can safely leave your big backpack or suitcase at Hagiang Loopways Hostel in Ha Giang City before the tour starts. Free luggage storage, 24/7 CCTV security, and our staff is on duty around the clock.
For the loop itself, pack a small daypack only — motorbike storage is limited, and your luggage is safer at the hostel than on the road.
Keep it light — pack a small backpack with:
• 2–3 sets of comfortable clothes (layers — mountains are cooler)
• Long pants and closed shoes for riding
• A warm jacket (year-round, evenings get cold)
• Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm
• Personal medication and toiletries
• Cash (ATMs are rare outside Ha Giang City)
• Power bank and camera
We provide helmets, knee/elbow guards and rain ponchos. No need to bring riding gear.
Each night is in a different hand-picked location along the loop — never the same place twice. Our accommodation includes stilt-house homestays in H'Mong villages, mountain lodges in Du Gia, and town hotels in Dong Van Old Quarter or Meo Vac.
All rooms have private bathrooms, hot water, and clean bedding. Private rooms for couples and family rooms for groups are available on request.
Every Hagiang Loopways tour is all-inclusive:

• All meals during the tour (except the last dinner on the final day)
